Happy Monday, Gael fans.
Saint Mary’s baseball infielder Zach Kirtley was named Thursday to D1Baseball.com‘s top-100 College Prospects for the 2017 MLB Draft. Kirtley is the only West Coast Conference player on the list and one of 20 infielders. He is among 42 position players on a list dominated by pitchers.
Kirtley is coming off a 2016 season in which he led the Gaels in nearly every offensive category (batting average, RBIs, home runs, doubles, walks) and helped the Gaels to one of their most successful seasons in program history. He spent his summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League playing among the country’s best. SMCGaels.com recently published a feature on Kirtley’s experience in the Cape Cod League this summer.

The Gaels men’s and women’s soccer teams had a lot in common with each other this weekend- Both played their final home match, both honored seniors on the field, and both teams earned significant wins.
The Women’s Soccer team finished their season at home Saturday afternoon against Loyola Marymount. The Gaels earned a 2-1 victory, closing out their year with three wins in their final four matches. SMC’s three wins against the WCC, one of the toughest conferences in the country, are the most the program has earned in 13 years.
Before the match, the team honored six student-athletes who played their final match as a Gael. Those seniors are- Julia McDonald, Jessica Imbrie, Samantha Dion, Morgan Darling, Kiana Quarles and Mary Fraser.
The Men’s Soccer team played their final home match of the year, a contest against Gonzaga. The Gaels needed a win in order to keep their WCC Championship hopes alive. When the pressure was on, the team executed winning 3-1.
In a pregame ceremony, the Gaels honored the three seniors on the team- Alex Braman, Lukas Isaacson and Rafael Sanchez Jr., to acknowledge the accomplishments of the graduating student-athletes.
To finish the season, the Gaels will play at Portland with the hopes of a WCC Championship still alive! If Saint Mary’s wins and if Pacific loses or draws (at Gonzaga), the Gaels will win the WCC Championship and earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Gaels last won the WCC Championship in 2011 and advanced all the way to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Watch or follow along as the Gaels and Pilots face off at 7 p.m. Saturday.
With less than two weeks until opening night and a Gaels basketball doubleheader at home, coaches and student-athletes from all West Coast Conference teams traveled to Los Angeles for the WCC Tip Off Event. Joe Rahon and Randy Bennett represented the men’s team and Devon Brookshire and Paul Thomas represented the women.
Preseason polls and all-conference teams were released and the Gaels once again found themselves near the top. The men were picked second by coaches, received three first-place votes, and landed Naar, Pineau, and Rahon on the all-WCC preseason team. The women were picked to finish third, earned one first-place vote, and Stella Beck was named to the preseason all-WCC team.
It was lights, camera, action as the Gaels talked about the excitement for the upcoming season and the focus in the final stretch of practices before games begin. SMCGaels.com has a full round-up of the day with multiple videos.
Both Gaels teams play their first game of the year at home in McKeon Pavilion. On Friday, November 11, the women host Cal at 5:30pm and the men play Nevada at 8:00pm. Tickets are available on SMCGaels.com and the games will be streamed live via GaelVision.
