Hermanson, Moss gain leadership experience at WCC Summit

Softball athlete Katie Moss and I attended a recent West Coast Conference Leadership Summit that was hosted at the University of Portland.  Two representative student-athletes from each of the 10 WCC schools were invited to attend. The event included several guest speakers, including the WCC commissioner Lynn Holzman.

The mission of SAAC is to improve the student athlete experience and, during the conference, we discussed ways to strengthen this at each of our schools.  Some of the themes we established included: Student athlete well-being, personal growth, sportsmanship and community service. Many of the speakers explained how, as student athletes, we are establishing our own personal brand. We are role models and leaders at our schools and the community, and our actions have an effect on more than just ourselves.

Katie (Moss) and I had a great time meeting the other representatives in the conference. We picked the brains of the other student athletes to find strategies to improve the student athlete experience at SMC specifically. By volunteering at the Oregon Food Bank on Saturday we learned the importance of teamwork, and how great of an impact we can have if we all work together. The guest speakers gave us inspiring speeches that touched on themes that translate not only to sports, but to life after sports as well. We feel that the conference helped us grow as leaders, and we are excited to bring our knowledge back to campus.

Editor’s Note:  Calvin and Katie will serve as Saint Mary’s SAAC co-presidents for the 2016-17 academic year.
