SMC golfer helps local pro qualify for US Senior Open

Saint Mary’s redshirt freshman golfer Evan Peterson probably thought it would be a few years until he would be involved in a qualifying tournament for the U.S. Senior Open.  After all, he still has about 30 more years until he meets the 50-year-old minimum age qualification.

But, the Clovis, Calif. native got right in the middle of the action when he served as caddy for co-medalist Mark Sherman during Tuesday’s qualifying round at Diablo Country Club.

The Green Valley CC head pro qualified for the Senior Open after shooting an even-par 70, tying Randy Haag, who also notched a spot in the USGA national championship for players 50 years-old and up.  The 2016 U.S. Senior Open is scheduled for August 8-14 at Scioto Country Club in Upper Arlington, Ohio.

“He was great out there,” Sherman told reporter Mack Drake of the Vacaville Reporter. “His dad and I were college teammates back in the day. He did a nice job of keeping me calm.”

Unfortunately, Peterson won’t get the call to be on the bag at the championships.  That position is reserved for Greg Stewart, a PGA member from Australia whom Stewart met on the Australian PGA Tour in the early 1990’s.
