Beck named to New Zealand squad for Olympic qualifying tournament

Saint Mary’s rising junior women’s basketball guard Stella Beck has been selected as one of 12 players named to the New Zealand National Team that will play in a FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in France next week.

Beck, who led the West Coast Conference in field goal percentage in each of her first two seasons, is currently in Spain with the Tall Ferns and will play the hosts twice before traveling to France.

New Zealand is placed in Group A and will open the tournament against host France on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in Nantes.  It will face Cuba on Wednesday.

The top five sides in the 12-team event will qualify for the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament at the 2016 Rio Games.
