Today’s final West Coast Conference game for the Saint Mary’s baseball team could easily be characterized as the most important in program history. With a win Sunday at Portland, the Gaels could win a piece of their first-ever WCC title. Along with the championship, a win would earn the Gaels the No. 1 seed at next week’s WCC Championship Tournament.
Today’s game will be televised live for Xfinity/Comcast customers in Northern California on Comcast Hometown Network (HD 819 / SD 104). Scheduled for a 1 p.m. (PDT) first pitch on Sunday, May 22, the game will be produced live from Joe Etzel Field by Comcast SportsNet Northwest with Travis Demers and Jim Wilson calling the action. In addition to live television coverage, the game will be streamed live on a variety of devices (computers, smartphones, tablets) at no charge on SMCGaels.com (via TheW.tv).
The weekend materialized like this — Entering the weekend, Saint Mary’s trailed Gonzaga by a single game and was tied with BYU for second place. Gonzaga won its first two games at San Diego to clinch at least a share of the WCC title, but was defeated by the Toreros on Saturday, 10-4. BYU swept through its final series versus Santa Clara to catch up with the Bulldogs and earn a share of the title. And now, entering Sunday’s series finale at Portland, the Gaels could also pull even with BYU and Gonzaga to become WCC champions.
The tournament will pit the WCC’s top-four teams at regular season’s end in a double-elimination format to determine who earns the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament’s opening day on Thursday features two games at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Day 2 on Friday features three games starting at noon, with the day’s competition determining who will play in Saturday’s championship.
