Baseball stays among top-50 programs in the country

Lots of wins — especially against quality opponents — has kept the Saint Mary’s baseball team ranked among the best in the country in the NCAA’s RPI rankings.

Since the first 2016 NCAA Baseball RPI rankings came out last week, Saint Mary’s has not been out of the top-60. Entering last weekend the Gaels were as high as No. 41, and after taking two of three from Pacific on the road they still sit at No. 47 in the NCAA RPI rankings as of Monday.

Saint Mary’s has not lost a series yet this season, including winning its first four West Coast Conference series for the first time in 39 years. The Gaels have also won key non-conference games already this year, beating current RPI No. 7 UC Santa Barbara on the road and sweeping the season series from defending Mountain West Conference champion Nevada. SMC also owns series wins over Gonzaga (No. 34) and San Diego (No. 64).

The Gaels’ schedule doesn’t get easier, but more wins will continue to boost their RPI ranking. SMC hosts RPI No. 35 BYU in a key WCC series starting Thursday. The Gaels also still have games against UC Santa Barbara, No. 50 Fresno State, No. 62 Washington and No. 71 Loyola Marymount.

Tickets for this week’s series versus BYU can be purchased online on SMCGaels.com or by calling the Saint Mary’s ticket office at 925-631-GoTx. Season tickets, group tickets, multi-game plans and single game tickets are available for purchase.
