Baseball near top-50 in first NCAA RPI

The Saint Mary’s baseball team appeared at No. 51 in Monday’s first release of the 2016 NCAA RPI rankings, knocking on the door of the top-50 after the season’s first seven weeks.

A number of the Gaels’ opponents this season, past or future, are highly ranked in the first RPI rankings. UC Santa Barbara, who the Gaels beat 7-4 on the road in February and will play again on April 26, is ranked No. 10. Gonzaga, who the Gaels took two of three from in a series two weeks ago, is at No. 33. Fresno State, who the Gaels nearly defeated on March 22 and will face again on May 3, is ranked No. 41. Loyola Marymount (No. 37), Arizona (No. 44) and Tennessee (No. 60) – all past or future opponents of the Gaels – are ranked among the RPI’s top-60.
