Need to know: Saint Mary’s men’s basketball

With a bit more attention from national college basketball pundits turned toward Moraga these days, we thought it might be a good idea to present a few of the highlights of the program.  Check out a few key facts about this year’s team as we enter the second half of league play this week:

  • 17-2 overall, 8-1 in the West Coast Conference (1st place).
  • 15-0 at home this season, one victory shy of the program record for home wins in a season (4 home games remain).
  • One of 12 programs nationally to have won 20 or more games in each of the last eight seasons.
  • Ranked #1 among mid-majors by CollegeInsider.com and MidMajorMadness.com.
  • Ranked 26th in today’s CBSSports.com’s “Top 25 (and one)”.
  • Ranked 28th in Associated Press and 27th in USA Today national polls.

  • A 4-1 record against teams rated in the Top 100 of the NCAA’s RPI:  Wins over UC Irvine (43), Stanford (48), Gonzaga (61) and BYU (74).  Only loss was a 4 point road setback at California.
  • Lost 80 percent of its scoring and rebounding and all five starters from last season’s NIT team.
  • Has ZERO seniors on this year’s team.
  • Owns the highest winning percentage over the last decade among all Division I programs in the state of California.
  • Has qualified for the postseason in each of the last 8 seasons (4 NCAA, 4 NIT).
  • Randy Bennett has the 3rd most wins in the history of the WCC.

Of course, there are a lot more positives this season.  If any of our eagle-eyed readers have information to add, just leave a reply below.  We’ll add your comments as appropriate.

  1. David Gonzalez says:

There s obviously a long way to go yet this season. However the accomplishments of the St Marys mens basketball team to date cannot be ignored. To do this without the benefit of one senior and without one returning starter is remarkable to say the least. I believe that should the season continue on this track that Randy Bennetts name should be very prominent in the conversation for National Coach of the Year.
