Former SMC hoops star enjoys big screen success

Saint Mary’s hoops fans attending the highly-anticipated opening weekend of the movie “Mockingjay — Part 2” from the popular Hunger Games series will notice former Gaels hoops standout Mahershala Ali  in a prominent role.

Ali, who was born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore and later converted to Islam and changed his surname, returns to his role as “Boggs,” the bodyguard for the main character, Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence.

Bay Area News Group writer Chuck Barney published this article about Ali and the film that describes his rise to fame and his surprise at the passion of fans of the movie.

Ali played basketball at Saint Mary’s from 1992-96 under coach Ernie Kent.  He is a Hayward native and graduated from SMC in ’96 with a degree in communication.
