SMC men’s soccer finishes just 1 point from WCC title

The Saint Mary’s men’s soccer team finished its season yesterday afternoon on a high note, beating the University of Portland 2-0 to finish with a 5-2 record in the WCC.   The Gaels went into the final few hours of the season with a chance to finish as high as second place in the league standings.

But, Santa Clara’s win over San Diego handed those two teams the WCC co-championship with 16 points (5-1-1), while Saint Mary’s finished third  – just one point behind the leaders with 15 points.

SMC has finished among the top half of the league standings in each of the last eight seasons and among the top 3 five times during that stretch.
