When former Saint Mary’s golfer Ben Geyer asked his college coach, Scott Hardy, to caddy for him at this week’s PGA Tour event, the Frys.com Open, there was little hesitation in Hardy’s answer. Of course, he would.
He did, however, breathe a sigh of relief that the golf course – Napa’s Silverado Country Club – doesn’t provide quite the physical challenge as the only other time he served as Geyer’s looper. That was at the Stonebrae Classic at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward – Geyer’s first PGA Tour event.
“I think I’m in reasonable shape,” chuckled Hardy. “I’m glad this course is a lot easier to walk than Stonebrae. “We’ve gotten through the first two rounds. Hopefully, there will be four more!”
Hardy was on the bag for Tuesday’s practice round and today’s Pro-Am. Geyer is scheduled to start his first round at 9 a.m. tomorrow off the first tee and is paired with Tyrone Van Aswegen and Smylie Kaufman.
The star-studded tournament field includes numerous recognizable names from the world of golf, including an impressive threesome of Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Brand Snedeker that goes off the 10th tee at 7:50 a.m.
“It was pretty cool to be shoulder-to-shoulder on the practice tee with some of the best golfers in the world,” said Hardy. “And to be around guys like Steph Curry, Andre Iguodala and other celebrities in today’s Pro-Am was pretty cool, too.”
