Former Gaels hoops stars face off in NBL opener

In a story that we’ll see throughout the season, especially with as many as eight Gaels playing professionally in Australia, last night’s National Basketball League season opener between Melbourne and Townsville looked like a Saint Mary’s alumni game.

Stephen Holt and Daniel Kickert’s United side won the first matchup of the season 99-84 over Clint Steindl and Mitchell Young’s Crocs.  Holt scored 17 points in his official Aussie debut, while Kickert added nine.  Steindl scored 13 points and Young chipped-in a bucket to go with three rebounds.

In the first game of the NBA season the previous night,  Matthew Hodgson announced his presence as a rookie for Adelaide with 18 points and 9 rebounds in a win over New Zealand.  Lucas Walker added 2 points and 4 rebounds.
