For those who follow Saint Mary’s women’s basketball, it is no secret the Gaels lost a trio of post players and two starters to graduation last spring. With four newcomers expected to make great strides this season, the one student-athlete that the East Bay may not know much about is Megan McKay, a 6-foot-3 post from Western Australia.
In an article by pickandroll.com.au, McKay was named the No. 2 Aussie freshman, ranking just behind the No. 1 recruit Alanna Smith of Stanford. McKay is described with “great size and strength,” where she posted 20.8 ppg and 15 rpg at the U18 Australian Junior National Championships.
The rest of the SMC newcomers include freshman Sydney Raggio who was named the CalHiSports.com DII Player of the Year and freshman Katie Rathbun who brings speed and a sharpshooter from the highly successful Carondelet basketball program.
The other newcomer is junior, Devon Brookshire. Brookshire was a highly sought after recruit in California before deciding on Northwestern. After two years and a redshirt year (2014-15), Brookshire is back in California and ready to contribute for the Gaels.
