Stella Beck of the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team is spending her summer playing with the New Zealand Tall Ferns. Beck, the WCC Newcomer of the Year, will play a home series against Japan in prep for the Oceania championship in Tauranga and Melbourne against Australia in August.
Beck is one of 23 players on the squad in Auckland participating in the three games July 16-19, as Beck will aim to take one of the 14-roster spots for her home country.
The winner of the Australia series will earn direct qualification into the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
In her first season with the Gaels in 2014-15, Beck was outstanding, starting all 33 games she appeared in. She led the WCC in field-goal percentage shooting at a 55 percent clip. In addition to her WCC Newcomer of the Year award, she also was named to the SMC Hilton Concord Classic All-Tournament Team.
