When incoming right-handed pitcher Jonathan Buckley arrives on campus at Saint Mary’s next fall, he’ll bring with him a 6-foot-4 frame, a big fastball and plenty of potential as he joins the Gaels baseball team.
The senior at Ayala-Chino Hills will also bring his own unique story to Moraga. A standout on the mound for the Bulldogs, Buckley was recently profiled by longtime preps writer Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times. After being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 12, Buckley has had to learn to manage the condition to stay on the field. He’s done so with a little advice from one particular Major Leaguer, and the results have been impressive.
Buckley and the rest of the Gaels’ incoming recruiting class will head to Saint Mary’s in the fall to begin preparations for the 2016 campaign. In the meantime, head coach Eric Valenzuela’s squad begins the final 15-game stretch of the 2015 regular season on Friday when San Diego comes to Louis Guisto Field for the first of three games. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
