Former Saint Mary’s women’s basketball standout Kate Gaze helped the Townsville Fire win their first WNBL championship on Sunday, beating Bendigo Spirit 75-65.
Bendigo was aiming for three straight titles, but Townsville held off the Spirit in winning the title in front of a sellout 2,200 fans.
For the year, Gaze appeared in 18 games, converting 10-for-28 from the field, 3-for-10 from three-point range with eight assists.
Gaze completed her Saint Mary’s career during the 13-14 season with 1,303 career points, good for 12th all-time at Saint Mary’s. Gaze also finished her career ranked No. 2 in the SMC record books in three-pointers made, free throw percentage and total assists.
