The field for the inaugural Aloha Invitational sand volleyball tournament in Hawai’i was officially announced Wednesday and Saint Mary’s will be part of a group that includes four teams ranked in the AVCA top 10 to begin the season.
The tournament, which will be held from April 24-25 at Queen’s Beach in Oahu, includes No. 4 Hawai’i, No. 5 Long Beach State, No. 5 UCLA and the No. 8-ranked Gaels. It will be broadcast by the CBS Sports Network and takes place one week before the AVCA Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala.
“We are honored to be included in the Aloha Invitational with such outstanding programs as Hawaii, UCLA, and Long Beach State,” SMC head coach Rob Browning said. “All indications are that it will be a fabulous tournament for many years to come. We will definitely be challenged with the strong field of teams, and we are looking forward to the opportunity.”
The Gaels get their 2015 season underway this week when they head to Stanford to take part in the NorCal Invitational beginning on Friday. The tournament, which includes local foes Cal, Pacific, San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Jose State, Sacramento State and the host Cardinal, runs through the weekend on the Stanford campus.
