Geyer’s final day sizzle lands 2nd-place at Long Beach Open

Former Saint Mary’s golfer Ben Geyer fired a sizzling 8-under par 64 to finish just one stroke behind another SMC Gael, Eric Meichtry ’93, to finish second at the Long Beach Open yesterday at El Dorado Golf Course.

The 2012 West Coast Conference champion and 2013 co-Player of the Year, finished the 72-hole professional event with impressive rounds of 68-69-67-64 for a 20-under par 268.  Starting four strokes off the lead going into yesterday’s final round, the Arbuckle, Calif. native birdied four holes and carded an eagle during his first nine holes, then registered three more birdies on the back nine to earn $14,500 of the $165,000 purse.

Meichtry, a 1987 graduate of Clayton Valley (Calif.) High School, played at Saint Mary’s during the 1992 and 1993 seasons. His seven top-10 finishes in 1993 still ranks as the second-most in program history.  He currently lives in Murrieta, Calif.
