Dramatic victories keep Gaels alive in NBA Summer League

A pair of former Saint Mary’s men’s basketball standouts live to play another day in the NBA Summer League as their teams come up with clutch late-game victories in Las Vegas.

Mickey McConnell scored 6 points as the starting point guard in the Charlotte Hornets’ 82-81 last-second victory over the Dallas Mavericks.  Former Oregon State guard Roberto Nelson connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to keep the Hornets alive in the knockout round of the league’s tournament format.  Charlotte plays New Orleans tomorrow.

Also in a starting role, Stephen Holt scored 4 points to go with 3 assists and 3 rebounds in just more than 22 minutes of action as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Golden State Warriors 68-65 in Cox Pavilion.  The Hawks will face the Portland Trailblazers in tomorrow’s second round.

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without the services of guard Matthew Dellavedova for the remainder of the tournament.  The Aussie is headed home to join the Boomers in preparation for the FIBA World Cup.
