Gabriel continues run at Pacific Northwest Amateur

Saint Mary’s senior Tye Gabriel advanced to the round of 16 at the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship with a 1-up victory over Northwestern University junior Andrew Whalen this morning at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.

The two golfers were all square through the first six holes before Whalen went 1 up on the seventh hole.  Gabriel countered with a pair of victories before Whalen tied the score on the 10th hole.  Gabriel then won two of the next three to go 2 up through 13 holes.  Whalen got one back on 17 but both golfers recorded pars on 18 to finish the round.

Gabriel plays Idaho prep state 2A champion and Washington State signee Derek Bayley today at 12:30 p.m.

Palouse Ridge GC has been good to the Gaels the last couple of years.  In 2013, Saint Mary’s qualified for the NCAA Championships with a third place finish at the NCAA West Regional at the course.
