SMC golfer upsets Aussie at PNW Men’s Amateur

Saint Mary’s senior Tye Gabriel upset stroke play medalist Dale Brandt-Richards 2 & 1 in the round of 64 today at the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championships at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.

Gabriel, a Portland native who played his first two seasons of college golf at the University of Oregon, finished stroke play in a tie for 59th place after carding rounds of 74-71 to open the tournament. Β He was the lowest seeded of the match play qualifiers and drew top-seeded Brandt-Richards in today’s opening round.

He will face Northwestern University junior Andrew Whalen of Ephrata, Wash. in tomorrow’s second round.
