By claiming a 21-6 victory in last weekend’s USA Rugby Division I-A championship, the Saint Mary’s rugby team showed exactly what it takes to win at Life.
Bad pun alert. We apologize. Now, back to the news of the day.
Having beaten Life University at Stanford, Saint Mary’s staked its claim to the title of best in all the land. Even with the Gaels’ national title win though, BYU also had an argument to that mantle as the Cougars won the Varsity Cup and split a pair of meetings with the Gaels.
In the end, the good folks at RugbyMag.com sided with the Gaels when it came to the season-ending poll. A season of stifling defense, combined with sheer dominance in the matches that called for it helped earn Saint Mary’s the No. 1 ranking to end the 2014 campaign.
The Gaels were also honored on campus this week, with the SMC community coming together to celebrate the achievement. Check out a gallery of photos from the event here.
