Annual jersey day concludes soccer spring training period

Each year the men’s soccer team concludes its annual spring training season with a special “Jersey Day” intrasquad practice scrimmage.  Today’s the Gaels gathered on the warm SMC Recreation Field turf in good spirits, ready to finish off the spring season in style.

Soccer Jersey DaySome of the interesting stories behind the various players’ choices of jerseys include:

  • Lucas Champenois wearing the Zinedine Zidane ’98 French national team jersey. He provided an interview to SMCGaels.com in both French and English.
  • Ben Braman, like several players, displayed the shirt of his hometown team – in this case, the Colorado Rapids (also the Academy team Ben and his twin brother, Alex, played on).
  • A few players wore jerseys that repped their favorite basketball team. Matt Reiser was in a Baron Davis Warriors jersey, and Lukas Isaacson in a Luke Ridnour (“because it’s my namesake.”) Seattle Sonics jersey.  Assistant Coach Chris Brown also rocked a Warriors jersey.
  • Bobby Conner and Riley Hanley apparently found two of the smallest jerseys they could find (Bobby in Brazil and Riley in Barcelona)
  • Junior Sanchez earned runner-up honors for best story.  He wore an Inter Milan jersey he received while in Italy on his 17th birthday. It has the number 17 on the back.
  • Nathan Grixti earned the best story award, wearing the jersey of a Scottish Premier League 2nd Division club, St. Johnstone. It was given to him by his 90-year-old neighbor.  (5/19 UPDATE: St. Johnstone won the Scottish Cup the day after SMC’s jersey day.  Coincidence?)
