Though they won’t officially join the Saint Mary’s community until later this summer, two of the Gaels’ newest volleyball players have been busy earning recognition on both the court and the sand.
In the gym, outside hitter Clare Powers recently helped her Vision Volleyball Club claim a prestigious title as the club won nine straight matches to win the NCVA Far Western National Qualifier in Reno, Nev. Her 18 Gold team had already qualified for this year’s National tournament in Minneapolis, Minn. later this summer but the win in Reno is another impressive feather in Powers’ cap as she prepares to move to Moraga.
While Powers is thriving indoors, fellow incoming Gael Mary Hernandez is equally busy winning awards on the sand. On Tuesday, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its inaugural AVCA High School Sand All-America Team and Hernandez found herself on the honorable mention list as one of just 12 players nationally to be recognized by the organization.
Powers, Hernandez and fellow incoming freshman Madi Wilkerson will join head coach Rob Browning’s squad later this summer as the 2014 Gaels begin preparations for the upcoming season.
