Annual hoops vs. soccer grudge match ends in controversy

Each year the Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team challenges the Gaels women’s soccer team to a futbol match.  And, each year both teams feel aggrieved at the result.  Today’s fourth-annual match was no different.

The men’s basketball team used its superior height and long stride length to capture a 3-2 victory on a warm afternoon at the SMC Recreation Field.  Reserve guard Jack Beiber scored twice and Jordan Giusti added a goal and two assists for the men’s team.  Jaime Turrentine and freshman Hannah Diaz each added scores for the women.

The “controversy” in the match came in the end when Treaven Duffy sent a nice shot into the upper corner but the goal was called off for offsides.

“The score should have been a lot higher, but we got the short end of several questionable calls,” said a clearly agitated but humble Giusti.  “I should have had three assists for the third year in a row, but the ref was clearly not on our side.”
