Thursday is Opening Day for full season minor league baseball teams which means multiple Saint Mary’s baseball alums will be scattered across the country as they look to hone their craft and advance through their teams’ respective systems.
Two former Gaels will be playing within driving distance for local SMC baseball fans and both are highly touted members of their organization. The closest to home is right-hander Martin Agosta, who will open the season with the San Francisco Giants Single-A affiliate, the San Jose Giants. Ranked the No. 21 prospect in the Giants’ organization, Agosta was one of the starting pitchers in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game last year.
A bit further up the freeway, former Gaels first baseman Anthony Aliotti will take part in his first Opening Day as a member of the Sacramento River Cats. Aliotti earned a promotion to the Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate last season after posting gigantic numbers at Double-A Midland and he begins the 2014 campaign as one of two first basemen on Sacramento’s roster.
Two other notable former Gaels alums will also kick their season off today. Outfielder Kyle Jensen begins 2014 as a member of the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Jensen hit 28 home runs last year between Double and Triple-A, the 12th-most in all of minor league baseball.
Finally, former SMC third baseman Patrick Wisdom will get his season underway as a member of the Double-A Springfield Cardinals. The right-handed hitting corner man bashed 15 home runs between two stops last season and he’ll look to continue that progress in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
