With the win over nationally ranked Gonzaga on Saturday, the Gaels are earning some national press in the process. It’s not just the national press taking notice of the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team, it’s the progression of the entire West Coast Conference.
Nine time champion Gonzaga is a consistent staple, but the Gaels are coming on strong this season, along with the likes of San Diego, Brigham Young, Pacific and Portland.
Saint Mary’s is no stranger to the Bulldogs, splitting the last six meetings with Gonzaga. Saint Mary’s women’s basketball has advanced to the postseason in each of the last four seasons. SMC last advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2000-01.
After knocking off the No. 21/24 ranked Bulldogs, the Gaels earned five votes in this week’s AP Poll (Coaches Poll still to come).
Check out some of the recent headlines on the Gaels on the ESPNw site. Former Gael and current Associate Head Coach Tracy Sanders was interviewed about the rising WCC.
Also on the national scene, Danielle Mauldin was named this week’s espnW.com Player of the Week, along with College Sports Madness High-Major and WCC Player of the Week.
