Much of the attention to Saint Mary’s basketball last night focused on the men’s team’s 59-44 win over American, which pushed the Gaels to a 9-0 record and equals the program record for most games without a loss to open a season.
But, overall, it was a great night to be a SMC hoops fan.
The SMC women’s team went down to Los Angeles and won its second game of the season against a Pac-12 opponent, scoring a decisive 71-55 win at USC. Seniors Kate Gaze and Jackie Nared combined for 43 points as the Gaels improved to 9-1 on the year. They play at CSU Northridge tomorrow then open West Coast Conference play next Saturday at home against Gonzaga.
In the NBA, Patty Mills led the San Antonio Spurs to a thrilling 104-102 win at the Golden State Warriors last night. The former SMC point guard scored a season-high 20 points. Patty has scored 20 or more points six times in his NBA career, four of those have come against the Warriors.
Tonight, Matthew Dellavedova and the Cleveland Cavaliers host Milwaukee at 4:30 p.m., while the Spurs have the night off before hosting Oklahoma City tomorrow.
The Saint Mary’s men travel today to Honolulu for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. The Gaels play South Carolina on Sunday at 8 p.m. (Pacific) then face either Boise State or host Hawai’i on Monday.
