Saint Mary’s golfers Mac McClung and Dalan Refioglu each finished today’s first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Championships above the magic top 64 line that provides qualification into Wednesday first round of match play.
McClung fired an even par 70 today and is tied for 19th place in the 312-player field at the USGA’s top amateur championship event, hosted by The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Refioglu shot a 1-over par 71 and is tied for 39th place.
Both McClung and Refioglu played the 6,635-yard, par 70 Charles River Country Club for today’s first round. They will go off at 4:20 and 4:30 a.m. (Pacific) tomorrow on the ninth hole of The Country Club course, which owns a 7,246-yard, par 70 layout.
Following tomorrow’s round, the field will be trimmed to the top 64 golfers that will advance to a match place competition that determines the U.S. Amateur champion.
