Saint Mary’s baseball coach Eric Valenzuela hit the ground running Thursday, spending his first day in Moraga getting re-acclimated to the SMC campus and getting a feel for his new role as head coach of the Gaels.
He finished the day in McKeon Pavilion, joining Saint Mary’s director of athletics Mark Orr (right) to watch the men’s basketball team hold open practice before a crowd of fervent Gaels supporters. Having already coached at Saint Mary’s earlier in his career, Valenzuela had no trouble re-connecting with the SMC faithful.
“(Today was) awesome. I got to meet a lot of good people and get started on some of the things that I need to get going,” Valenzuela said. “It’s great to see the turnout here for the basketball team as they get ready to go to Australia. I’m just excited to get started.”
Valenzuela was announced Wednesday as the 12th head coach in modern Saint Mary’s baseball history, and now begins the task of building his new staff and transitioning into the skipper’s role at SMC.
