Canadian Gaels Making Strides This Summer

A pair of Canadians on the Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team are having busy summers.  Samantha Dion (South Surrey, British Columbia) and Caroline Beaulne (Longueuil, Quebec) are both helping their international squads.

Dion recently helped the Vancouber Whitecaps Girls Elite team to the 2013 Gothia World Youth Cup title in the U19 division in Gothenburg, Sweden.

According to, the official website of the Vancouver Whitecaps,  Dion gave the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead after netting a penalty kick in the 24th minute.

The Vancouver Whitecaps won all seven matches played at the 2013 Gothia World Youth Cup, including their sweep of four matches in group play followed by three victories in the knockout rounds.

Beaulne is part of the 19 prospective players assembled for next year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014.  She will be in the 12-day Women’s National Excel camp in Copenhagen, Denmark July 23 – August 3.

According to the Canada Soccer website, the Canadian squad will take part in a three-match friendly schedule in Denmark taking on local professional side Ballerup-Skovlunde on 29 July; before doing battle with national teams from Norway (31 July) and Denmark (2 August).

Andrew Olivieri, Head Coach for Canada’s Women’s U-20 Team will be in charge of the camp.

The upcoming camp in Denmark is the third project of the 2013 season for players in the specific U-17 to U-19 age group who will be eligible to participate in the 2014 FIFA Women’s World Cup which will take place in Canada in August of next year.

Players on this edition of the Canadian roster have also featured with Canada’s EXCELeration program, as well as with the Women’s National Team during the 2013 season.
