Despite 28 from Gaels, Aussies drop 9-point decision to Canada

Despite a combined 28 points from former Saint Mary’s forwards Clint Steindl and Mitchell Young, Australia dropped a 92-83 decision to Canada today in Group C play at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

Australia plays the United States at 7:30 a.m. (Pacific) tomorrow.  That game will be streamed live on and replayed on ESPNU at 4 p.m.

The Aussies led by 8 points with 7:44 left to play when Steindl drained a 3-pointer to make the score 75-67.  But, Canada went on a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to tie the score at 77-apiece with 5:32 remaining then outscored the Aussies 15-5 down the stretch to clinch the victory.

Both Steindl and Young scored 14 points in the game.  Young added seven rebounds and shot 6-of-10 from the field.  The Aussies were outscored 58-28 in the paint.
