Former Saint Mary’s men’s basketball assistant coach Rick Croy was named Tuesday as the new head coach at California Baptist, leaving Moraga after three extremely successful years in Moraga.
“We are very excited for Rick,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Randy Bennett. “In his three years at Saint Mary’s, we won two conference championships and went to the NCAA tournament twice. He was highly instrumental in our success. We will miss his tremendous leadership skills, but most of all, him as a person. We wish him nothing but the best and success as the new head coach at Cal Baptist.”
A Bay Area native who graduated from Northgate High in Walnut Creek, Croy assisted with all aspects of coaching, including recruiting, practice and game preparation and player development at Saint Mary’s.
He returns to a familiar community at Cal Baptist, having previously worked as an assistant at UC Riverside. He has also served as head coach at Citrus College in Glendora.
Croy takes over for Tim Collins, who recently retired after 34 years at the helm. The Lancers went 14-13 last season, and are competing their transition to NCAA Division II status.
