Big weekend coming up for the Gaels

One of the more impactful sports weekends of the season takes place Friday and Saturday with a pair of championship events happening on campus.

The softball team hosts Portland State in a best-of-three championship series that will determine the Pacific Coast Softball Conference champion and the league’s automatic entrant into the NCAA Tournament.  The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday with the second game at noon on Saturday.  If necessary, a third, and final, game would be played afterward on Saturday afternoon.

The club rugby team hosts Arkansas State in the semifinals of the USA Rugby DI-A Collegiate National Championships.  Scheduled for a noon start at Pat Vincent Field, the winner will face the winner of the Life versus BYU match at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah in the D1A National Championship game on May 19.

Other events of note include the SMC women’s tennis team facing Yale in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at 11 a.m. at Stanford.  The winner will play the winner of Stanford vs. Stony Brook on Saturday in the NCAA second round.

The SMC rowing team will participate in the West Coast Conference Championships Saturday morning at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.  The Varsity 4, 2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 8 will compete with the first race beginning at 9 a.m.

And, finally, the Gaels baseball team travels to Portland for a 3-game WCC series at Portland Friday-Sunday.
