Little known Saint Mary’s All-America fact

Earlier this week, Saint Mary’s guard Matthew Dellavedova was announced as an honorable mention All-America selection by the Associated Press.

A little Internet research provided a couple of related facts that might be of interest to Gaels basketball fans:

  1. It appears the first Saint Mary’s player to earn All-America honors was Frank Kudelka by the Helms Foundation in 1948. Tom Meschery was a 3rd-team selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) in 1960.
  2. Meschery also earned 3rd-team honors by the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA) and was listed as an All-America selection by the United States Basketball Writers of America (USBWA) in 1961.
  3. Four Gaels have earned honorable mention All-America honors by the Associated Press: David Vann in 1982; Omar Samhan in 2010; Mickey McConnell in 2011; and Dellavedova in 2012.
  4. Dellavedova is the first underclassman since Meschery to earn any All-America mention.
