Saint Mary’s College and KTVU Channel 2 are teaming up to invite citizens from across the Bay Area — Gaels and non-Gaels alike — in the service of schools in the North Bay, South Bay, East Bay and San Francisco.
Volunteers will serve at 22 schools, where they will do important work like building and maintaining school gardens, painting, organizing classroom materials for teachers and other general cleaning and sprucing projects.
During the registration process, select the location closest to you and organizers will match you up with a school in your area. Groups are encouraged to register. Just indicate the name of your group on the registration form so we can place you together. You’ll receive all the details about your assignment during the week of March 11, 2013.
All participants will receive a Great Bay Area Service Day for Schools T-shirt and a nutritious lunch!

Sounds like a great idea. Should be expanded to areas outside the SF Bay.
